Lake Nakuru Day Trip
Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes at an elevation of 1754 m above sea level. It lies to the south of Nakuru, in the rift valley of Kenya, and is protected by Lake Nakuru National Park.
The lake's abundance of algae used to attract a vast quantity of flamingos that famously lined the shore. Other birds also flourish in the area, as do warthogs, baboons, and other large mammals. Eastern black rhinos and southern white rhinos have also been introduced.
The lake's level dropped dramatically in the early 1990s but has since largely recovered. In 2013, the lake received an alarming increase in the water levels that led to the migration of flamingos to Lake Bogoria in search of food supply.
Nakuru means "Dust or Dusty Place" in the Maasai language. Lake Nakuru National Park, close to Nakuru town, was established in 1961. It started off small, only encompassing the famous lake and the surrounding mountainous vicinity, but has since been extended to include a large part of the savannahs.
Lake Nakuru is protected under the Ramsar Convention on wetlands.
Day 1: Nairobi-Lake Nakuru
From Nairobi, depart after breakfast and take a scenic drive westwards through the smallholder vegetable and horticultural plantations of Kikuyu, then along the escarpment on the edge of the Rift valley, with a brief photo- stop at the picturesque Viewpoint. From this vantage point, you can look at the panoramic view of the floor of the Rift valley below, dominated by the two dormant volcanic peaks of Suswa and Longonot.
Thereafter continue with your descent into the Rift Valley, past the country town of Naivasha. We continue our drive past Gilgil and Lake Elementaita, the smallest of the Rift valley lakes to the left, while to the right we pass the prehistoric site of Kariandusi. On arrival in Nakuru, we enter the park and enjoy a game drive along with one of the shores of the lake before lunch.
After lunch enjoy another game drive then drive out of the park and return to Nairobi where you arrive in the early evening
